My, oh my how time flies.
It has been a busy month here on our farm. Matt was finally able to get into the field to plant corn and soybeans, which had me helping him fill the planter with seed or on occasion delivering seed to the field. It also meant shuffling vehicles or providing rides here and there. In some cases, I got to enjoy the view while watching Matt plant the crops like in the picture below with the moon shining over the trees and tractor.
When I haven’t been helping him I’ve managed to get the garden planted (in some cases twice). We have green beans (what got planted twice thanks to a mole running right down the row and eating every seed), peas, carrots (a first try for me), broccoli, cabbage (Matt likes his sour kraut), peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach and onions. Our other vegetable right next to the garden, which has been here for pretty much ever, is the asparagus. The space between the tomatoes and lettuce I not planted as of yet we’ll see if I add anything else.
I’m hoping to have lots of tomatoes this year so we can make more tomato juice, spaghetti sauce, stewed tomatoes and BBQ sauce and can it all. It is so nice not to have to think about having this stuff in the house. I can’t really remember the last time I bought spaghetti sauce or stewed tomatoes. I still have Brussels sprouts and asparagus from last year in the freezer.
I have finished (for the most part) hoeing, this time around, today. I’m hoping to get my second picking of the spinach and lettuce done today and turn the sprinkler on. I’m going to have to see about getting the tiller running by myself though. Matt ran the tiller though the garden twice before I got everything (except the onions) planted. It was so nice to plant a garden in such wonderfully prepared soil.
While I haven’t been in the garden or helping Matt I have hunted morel mushrooms (and found a jackpot tree), worked on Will’s bedroom trying to get the mudding finished up so I can get it cleaned up and painted, mowed the lawn (more like three lawns that take at least two hours each) twice, worked a few claims for my paid job as an adjuster, changed the oil in my car, fed the cows to many times to count while Matt has been busy in the field and the list goes on and on.
While caring for the cows I went looking for a new calf that I hadn’t seen in a few days and found her hiding in the tall grass just outside the electric fence. In this case, if I would have tried to get her back in with the cows she might have run off and then we would have real problems or her momma could have come after me for messing with her little one, either one would not be good so I just left her alone. Besides the little heifer would have just went right back out, if I had gotten her in, and hid in the grass.
I’m hoping with the long weekend I’ll get the tiller running by myself, Will’s room primed and ready to paint, the kitchen dealt with and be prepared for any craziness that comes with all of that.
Later,
Stephanie
